For centuries Tibetan flags, inscribed with prayers or invocations, have been hung out for the wind to carry beneficial vibrations across the land. The Bhavana Project was inspired both by this tradition, and my dream to create a group work acknowledging the positive forces in our lives. Using flags as a vehicle, the idea was to send out positive energy to share with the world. Bhavana, the root meaning "to become", is a Sanskrit word which describes the emergence and visualization of intention. This intention can help to bring us more in balance with our higher self.
Over the course of the project I created a set of twelve flags on which the participants wrote or drew their personal statement. The first flag was intentionally left open for potential. From July 2005 through November 2006, the flags traveled around California, New Mexico, Washington, Oregon, and England. They were placed in nature, at retreat centers, in backyards and even at a wedding reception. The flags seem to have a special field of energy around them. It was an amazing journey to be involved in, both as participant and facilitator. For many the process took surprising turns, inspiring unexpected creative expression or playfulness of spirit. What began as self reflection grew into a shared experience of discovery and appreciation for the beauty of life. It was apparent to me that this wonderful project needed to continue. The third set of flags is currently underway.
In 2007, the flags were shown in two California exhibitions at Santa Monica Yoga and the Red Bluff Art Gallery. In 2008, they were exhibited at Sound Yoga- Seattle, WA, the Vedic Chant Center- Santa Fe, NM and Sewing Arts Center- Santa Monica, CA.
